Deep excavation of gas main SGN
Heavily Populated Area, Kent
Our efficient Gatekeeping Process identified that deep excavation was required following an internal camera survey of an 18” gas main on behalf of SGN. The work site was in a heavily populated area. Therefore the Gatekeeping Process made plans for work on a 4.2m deep excavation whereby the appropriate risk assessments were completed, permits gathered and the right teams deployed with the right equipment to complete the task with no complications.
Owing to the depth and the diameter of the gas mains we used specialist deep excavation close trench sheet support. A specified qualified ‘Competent Person’ (CP) became the named lead on-site so that works could take place in a controlled manner. We employed Safe Dig techniques as well as conducting regular monitoring of all site conditions and trenches. Regular atmosphere tests were completed to ensure the wellbeing of staff and the community.
Our skilled team worked expertly to complete the tasks within the scope of the permit conditions. They followed and recorded best practice at all times. In addition, they liaised directly with the Authorising Engineer providing regular updates, notification of any changes as well as speedy closure of the permit and site. In addition to the sheet piles, preventing falls from height, we used a timber box frame which was lowered as excavation proceeded.
This project was characterised by excellent team work, collaboration and communication between different CLC Utilities workforce elements and the customers, community operations and Local Authorities. By reusing excavated materials we were also able to considerably reduce the cost and ensure a timely reinstatement, minimising disruption.
