18″ Mains Repair, AMEY & Affinity Water
Stonnard’s Hill, Epping
CLC Utilities completed a large scale repair of an 18” asbestos trunk main which served 10,000 customers on behalf of AMEY and Affinity Water. There was a major leakage (water) at the base of a Valve Chamber 6m underground. It was essential to ensure water supply to customers continued during the 7 weeks of works. We installed two temporary 150mm over-land rider mains ensuring water quality and continuance throughout the works.
Our expert teams excavated three major pits up to a depth of 7m. We employed safe processes including excavation tabling methods to stabilise trench walls, specialist box sections and sheet piling apparatus as well as specialist pipe cutting and asbestos removal. We organised and executed all best practice and required steps for a 7 week road closure including Traffic Management and Diversion and a temporary works access road. We used specialist mains teams to complete the work, operating on a rota to ensure adequate cover.
CLC Utilities employed Circular Economy techniques to reduce costs, improve efficiency and time on site, as well as minimise impact on the environment. Valuable top soil was retained to reuse for backfill. We used foam concrete. SHEQ teams worked skilfully and we regularly ensured an SHEQ manager was on site with daily safety briefings. We also ensured that we had Welfare Units present during the course of the works.
